My Vision for My Future (courtesy of Zoltar)

I have a passion for teaching. I believe that comes across both in my work as a trainer and facilitator and my personal life as a Jiu Jitsu instructor. The question is, "What do I want to do with said passion and how can I turn that into SMART goals?"

My original plan when I signed up for the PIDP was to use the knowledge to improve and elevate the training offered at the Wickaninnish Inn. And improvements have been made based on what I have learned so far. Feedback surveys have been developed and improved, exercises to engage participants have been adapted and improved, and I've tried to build a community amongst team members taking an online course we offer (results TBD). All of these are a step in the right direction. But what else is there?

I had pushed to create a new position here, that of Training & Development Manager, with the broad scope of aligning all departments' training programs with best practices, equipping departmental trainers with the knowledge and tools to provide said training, as well as developing an overarching curriculum at the Inn for our team who want to progress in their hospitality career. However, this has not been approved by management so I'm forced to consider other options.

So, the first step of other options is to complete my PIDP and I'm aiming to do just that by the end of this year. One of the challenges I'm experiencing is that the StrongerBC grant I've used so far is on pause for what looks like the first half of the year. As such I'm looking at securing a low-interest student loan to cover the remaining classes. Fingers crossed!

If I were to consider options that aren't at the Inn then my long-term goal is to become a Hospitality Instructor at one of the various colleges or universities in Canada. While the Inn has many alumni and contacts at many of the learning institutions around the country, I have not reached out to any of them yet. I have been casually checking job boards at some colleges and will continue to do so. If I was to try and align this with SMART goals then I would have to say that at the beginning of 2025, I want to move from my current position to that of a Hospitality Instructor. This will involve a much more concentrated effort of job searching come Fall 2024, as well as leveraging the alumni and contacts from work. So this then also involves sharing my plan with the Inn around the same time.

Now, I also mentioned my passion for Jiu Jitsu. This is a much easier one to figure out. Tuff City Jiu Jitsu (my club) is planning two gradings this year, April and November. If all goes well I will achieve my brown belt by the end of the year. That is my goal for 2024.

This is the first time that I've written my goals out. I have spoken to friends and family (and therapists) about them but never written them down. Maybe 2024 will be the year of manifesting my goals now they are out in the world. Oh and by manifesting I mean working damn hard toward them!

I encourage you to share some goals of your own in the comments!
