Shorinji Kan Jiu Jitsu is a modern form of the traditional Japanese martial art Jiu Jitsu. It encompasses locking, throwing and striking techniques to provide an effective defence system. The wide variety of restraint and take down techniques allow for a controlled response to a violent confrontation. The techniques taught involve using the attacker's movement and momentum against themself.
Regular training gives you improved strength, fitness, co-ordination and posture as well as improved concentration, confidence, and leadership skills
We believe that Jiu Jitsu has something to offer everyone. Whether you’re a "I’ve never set foot in a gym in my life" type or a total fitness fanatic, the best way to see what we’re about is to come and have a go yourself.
We start with a warm up and stretching to get ready for the session ahead.
Then we run through our breakfalling techniques to further limber up.
The real fun begins as we focus on several different techniques for self defence, including striking, locking, throwing, ground work and weapon defences, and how to apply them in different contexts.
Wear loose comfortable clothing that you can move around and get a bit hot and sweaty in. Sweatpants/shorts/leggings and a t-shirt are ideal but as long as clothing isn’t too restrictive, it doesn’t really matter. Because Jiu Jitsu is a contact sport, for safety reasons you should also remove or secure any jewellery and tie your hair back if it is long.
Almost certainly yes, but you’ll only know if you try! Jiu Jitsu works on the principle of redirecting an attacker’s force and momentum against them, using the minimum necessary effort to produce the maximum effect. This means you don’t have to be particularly big or strong to do well, and you don’t have to be fit to start with, although you will find you get fitter!
$10 per session and yes!
As we are a not for profit organization, you will find we are extremely good value for money as our clubs charge the minimum necessary to cover their hall fees and other costs of running the club. The instructor takes no money and everything collected goes back into the club.
